Frequently Asked Questions

What is the exposure triangle?

The three settings that control how much light reaches your sensor: aperture (size of the opening), shutter speed (how long the sensor is exposed), and ISO (sensor sensitivity). Changing one requires compensating with another to maintain the same exposure.

What is a stop?

A stop is a doubling or halving of light. Opening the aperture by one stop doubles the light. Doubling the shutter speed halves the light. Each stop of ISO doubles the sensor's sensitivity.

What EV should I use?

EV 15 is bright sunlight. EV 12 is overcast. EV 8 is indoor lighting. EV 3 is dim indoor. These are starting points — meter your scene for accuracy.
